Street party

In Barrow in Furness, people at a local library celebrated young volunteers in the community, sharing fun that spanned generations. Their Big Lunch featured stalls, crafts and activities from organisations and services across Furness, a volunteer celebration ceremony, entertainment, as well as the grand opening of the Walney Community Space refurbishment.

What is the Big Lunch?

How many of us could say we know our neighbours, or those in our local community? People we can share a pot of tea with, lend items or just say hello to in the street? Knowing and supporting those around us can offer a lifeline in times of need. Our societies are becoming increasingly fragmented and this can leave us vulnerable and less resilient to life’s challenges.

As part of Eden Project’s mission to demonstrate and inspire positive action for the planet, it works with communities to help people feel like they belong, wherever they live. The educational charity believes we are better equipped to tackle challenges when we face them together. It aims to reconnect people with nature, bring about positive change, and inspire advocates of action.

The Big Lunch project started with a very simple idea. What if, on one day a year, people came together with their communities and shared a meal? And so, in 2009, The Big Lunch was born. It’s the UK’s annual get-together for neighbours, with millions coming together for a few hours of friendship, food and fun.

The Big Lunch connects people and encourages friendlier, safer communities where people start to share more – from conversations and ideas to skills and resources. For many, it ignites a passion for doing other good things where they live.

If you’d like to hold your own Big Lunch, the Eden Project have everything you need to get started, including posters, invitations, bunting templates, ice-breaker activities and more.

A Big Lunch can be anything from coffee and cake with your neighbours to a family fun day and everything in between. You can hold one at any point in the year (the 2024 pack is still available) or start planning for next year’s Big Lunch now!
